Testing positive to COVID-19 and managing COVID-19 safely at home

  • January 9, 2022

Thank you for attending the pop up COVID-19 PCR clinic at The Village GP Black Rock.

As you would already be aware, your swab has returned a positive result.

We appreciate we may not be your usual medical clinic – please do not hesitate to contact your regular GP should you have any concerns.   If this is not possible, we remind you that you are now eligible for Medicare funded telehealth consultations at our practice.  The easiest way to book an appointment with one of our GPs is online via our website at:

When to call your GP?

Generally speaking, with good supportive care at home, you should not need any formal medical attention.  If, however, you can relate to any of the following, you should book at appointment with your GP irrespective of how well you feel as you are in a higher risk category for severe disease:

  • people who are over 65,
  • pregnant,
  • immunocompromised, or are
  • both unvaccinated/partially vaccinated and
  • those who have certain diseases eg. diabetes, obesity, kidney, heart, liver or lung disease

Please seek urgent medical attention with any of the following symptoms:

  • breathlessness, which is unusual for you eg. Not being able to count to twenty in a single breath
  • fainting, extreme lethargy, or becoming unconscious at any point
  • skin turning blue or too pale, or becoming clammy and cold
  • pain or pressure in the chest
  • confusion
  • passing no urine or a lot less urine than usual
  • coughing up blood.

The Victorian Government has put together an excellent support tool to support you as you work through isolation guidelines, caring for yourself at home, notifying your contacts and your workplace.  This can be found at:

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners also has a comprehensive guide and symptom diary for managing COVID at home.  This is very helpful for tracking your own symptoms and learning how to recognise signs that may suggest a deterioration in your health or someone you care for.  This is located at:

The Royal Children’s Hospital has a comprehensive fact sheet to support carers of children with COVID-19, it can be found at:

Otherwise, we’d like to wish you all the best for a speedy recovery!
