Having worked in general practice and emergency medicine for over 13 years, Dr Maureen Burke is passionate about improving health care for Australians. Despite enjoying every aspect of general practice, she is particularly interested in chronic illness management, pediatrics, reproductive medicine, mental health, travel medicine, aged care, and palliative care.
She was born and raised in a picturesque Irish town called West Cork. Her interest in the human brain and body began when she studied Physiology at University College Cork in Ireland. After earning her degree, she realized she wasn’t interested in lab work. Her desire to connect with people and her love of science led her to want to study medicine and become a doctor.
After being accepted at the University of Sydney, her love for adventures led her to travel across the globe to study medicine. She packed up her bags and flew across the world to study medicine in Australia. The decision to study medicine in Australia was the beginning of one of her best career decisions.
Prior to becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, she completed her GP training in Gippsland mentored by Dr Michael Kunze and Dr James Brown OAM at Trafalgar Medical.
She felt she was in a good position to bridge the medical care gap. For Dr Maureen Burke, Australians must have access to quality health care in their own communities without long waiting periods or long distances between clinics.
So she used the experiences she had to develop a cutting-edge practice of her own that prioritized the welfare of her patients.
She then moved to Melbourne and worked at Monash Health, mostly in anaesthesia and intensive care, but also in medical specialities and emergency medicine.
Her passion for forming long-term relationships with patients led her to become a Specialized General Practitioner in Victoria. In order to provide the best health care to the communities she serves, The Village GP was created. She considers it a great privilege to be able to assist them with their lives.
Outside medicine, Dr Maureen Burke has many interests. Her favourite hobby is cooking, and she loves spending time with family and friends.
